SBI CBO Computer Aptitude preparation in this guide focuses on banking reasoning practice: puzzles, seating arrangements, syllogism, inequalities and other logical reasoning topics. Use the numbered checklist, solving methods and original examples below to plan your preparation.
Banking reasoning topic checklist
The following is a suggested reasoning preparation checklist, not an official chapter-by-chapter SBI syllabus.
- Puzzles: floor, box, scheduling, month/date and selection-based sets
- Seating arrangements: linear, circular, parallel rows and facing directions
- Syllogism and logical conclusions
- Inequalities and coded inequalities
- Coding–decoding
- Machine input–output
- Blood relations
- Direction sense and distance
- Order and ranking
- Alphabet and alphanumeric series
- Data sufficiency
- Statement–assumption, statement–conclusion, arguments and course of action
Puzzles and seating arrangements
- Read the entire set once and identify the entities and variables.
- Draw a clear base arrangement before placing clues.
- Place definite information first: fixed positions, direct relationships and restrictions.
- Use separate cases only when a clue genuinely creates alternatives.
- Eliminate a case as soon as it violates any condition.
- Check every original clue against the final arrangement before answering.
For circular arrangements, clearly mark whether people face the centre or outside. For linear arrangements, check north/south facing before applying left and right. Do not change the diagram convention halfway through the set.
Methods for shorter reasoning questions
- Syllogism: use a valid diagram and test whether a conclusion must follow. Do not add information from everyday knowledge.
- Inequalities: combine compatible relations and identify whether a definite comparison is possible.
- Blood relations: draw a family tree, mark stated gender and keep generations separate.
- Direction sense: trace each movement in sequence and distinguish final direction from shortest distance.
- Order and ranking: identify the viewpoint and whether ranks are counted from the same or opposite ends.
- Input–output: identify the transformation at each step before predicting the next arrangement.
- Data sufficiency: decide whether the information is enough; do not assume unstated facts.
Original reasoning practice examples
- Syllogism: All officers are employees. All employees are adults. Does ‘All officers are adults’ follow? Answer: Yes. The entire officer group falls within employees, and employees fall within adults.
- Inequality: A > B and B ≥ C. Which relation between A and C definitely follows? Answer: A > C. A is greater than B, which is at least as large as C.
- Ranking: In a row of 30 people, a person is 12th from the left. What is the rank from the right? Answer: 19th, using total − left rank + 1.
- Direction: A person walks 3 km north and then 4 km east. What is the shortest distance from the starting point? Answer: 5 km. The two perpendicular movements form a right triangle.
These are original learning examples, not official or recalled SBI questions.
Seven-session practice and revision plan
- Session 1: syllogism and inequalities.
- Session 2: blood relations, direction sense and ranking.
- Session 3: coding–decoding and alphanumeric series.
- Session 4: linear and circular seating arrangements.
- Session 5: floor, box and scheduling puzzles.
- Session 6: input–output, data sufficiency and statement-based reasoning.
- Session 7: a mixed timed test followed by complete analysis.
Maintain an error notebook under four headings: misread clue, incorrect diagram, unnecessary case and time-management error. Reattempt the same set after reviewing the mistake. Practise accuracy first, then increase speed gradually.
